NORTHWOODS ACADEMY-GENERAL INFORMATION
The Northwoods Academy is a collaborative effort of the Nicolet Distance Education Network (NDEN), Cooperative Service Agency #9 (CESA 9), the Northwoods School to Work Consortium, and Nicolet Area Technical College, and is part of the Wisconsin Academy Staff Development Initiative (WASDI), a statewide professional development consortium. The goal of the Academy is to provide educators with a high quality, standards-based professional development program designed to improve teaching and learning in the schools and to assist educators in meeting state recertification standards.
Who is the Academy For?
The Academy is a learning experience for all public and parochial elementary, middle, and high school educators, as well as for vocational/technical college educators. The Academy planners interpret the term educators broadly to include all instructional, non-instructional, pupil services, and administrative staff who work with students and programs in the schools. Workshops are designed to appeal to a broad range of educators, from those who are novices to those who are seeking more advanced training. Each Academy workshop description includes the applicable Wisconsin Teacher Certification Standards.
The Academy Experience
When you participate in the Northwoods Academy, you will spend most of your week in the state-of-the-art classrooms of Nicolet Area Technical College. You will be enrolled in one workshop for the entire week. One half day will be spent touring a manufacturing, service, or other business in our region to gain a better knowledge, appreciation, and understanding of the skills, attitudes, and experiences students need to be successful in the world of work. Breakfast and lunch will be provided daily at no charge to participants.
Graduate Credit Options
Participants may earn two graduate credits from Viterbo University for an additional fee of $180.00. Registration for Viterbo graduate credits will take place on the first day of the Academy. With the prior approval of their local technical college, participants may earn credits toward vocational recertification.
What will be Taught?
Educators will be provided with experiences at the Northwoods Academy which will enhance teaching and learning. When you complete this intensive week-long educational experience, you will:
- have an increased understanding of how content related concepts can be presented through hands-on problem-solving, cooperative learning, application, and demonstration activities.
- have learned how to design and implement instructional strategies and performance assessments based on state and national standards.
- have knowledge of classroom applications of technology and the skills to integrate technology into your curriculum.
- have learned to use instructional strategies that promote equity and meet the diverse learning needs of your students.
- have an increased awareness of school to work initiatives and community resources.
- have networked with other educators and developed attitudes and skills enabling you to become a local educational leader.
